Baffin Fisheries, owned by five Inuit Hunters and Trappers Associations, recently expanded its fleet with the Inuksuk II—an 80-meter Arctic-ready fishing trawler. Designed for sustainable operations in the North Atlantic and polar regions, it is the largest fishing vessel along the Canadian coastline. Zenitel is proud to contribute to this project, delivering integrated communication systems that enhance crew safety, operational efficiency, and welfare onboard.

The construction of the Inuksuk II was carried out by one of Europe’s leading shipyards, Tersan Shipyard Inc. Renowned as a reliable partner in building advanced and sustainable vessels, as well as in ship repair, Tersan Shipyard successfully executes highly complex projects. The company specializes in delivering state-of-the-art fishing, passenger, offshore, and various other vessels of different sizes and types. Its commitment to sustainable practices has enabled it to gain extensive expertise in implementing eco-friendly solutions.

Built for Baffin Fisheries, the Inuksuk II stands out with its clean design and advanced automation capabilities. This purpose-built vessel is designed for harvesting and processing shrimp and Greenland halibut (turbot) in Arctic waters. The trawler is equipped with a processing and freezing plant, along with robotic freezing and sorting systems that operate seamlessly even in temperatures ranging from -15 to -18 degrees Celsius, streamlining daily tasks for the crew.

The vessel’s communication systems were supplied by Zenitel Croatia, which maintains a strong, trust-based partnership with Tersan Shipyard, built on years of successful collaboration.

Advanced Maritime Assets for Canadian Indigenous Communities

The Inuksuk II arctic fishing vessel has joined the fleet of Baffin Fisheries, a leading commercial fishing company in the region. Owned by five Inuit Hunters and Trappers Associations in the Qikiqtani region, the company specializes in harvesting Greenland halibut (turbot) and cold-water shrimp, supplying over 10,000 tonnes of these products annually.

This advanced fishing trawler was introduced to strengthen the Inuit community’s capacity for sustainable fishing and employment. With its large size and advanced onboard technology, the vessel opens new opportunities for more efficient and safer harvesting and processing of fish and shrimp in the harsh Arctic environment.

Zenitel’s scope of delivery includes the following solutions:

Enhancing Safety, Efficiency, and Crew Welfare in Arctic Operations

Seamless communication is essential in Arctic operations, where harsh conditions demand reliability. From emergency messaging and alarm distribution to coordinating daily tasks, Zenitel systems ensure clear and intelligible communication throughout the vessel.

To ensure reliability, the systems are designed with redundant communication paths. The SPA-V2 mutes IPTV audio during PA announcements, ensuring that alerts are heard instantly. DECT integration enables alarm delivery directly to mobile handsets, supporting rapid response in engine rooms and other critical zones. CCTV supports safe and efficient operations through remote monitoring of critical areas, while the master clock system synchronizes routines and shift changes across the vessel.

Crew welfare is also supported by IPTV and DECT systems, offering both entertainment and easier access to onboard communication.
