River Cruise Communication for Emerald Astra and Emerald Lumi

Part of the Scenic Group, Emerald Cruises continues to expand its river fleet. River cruise communication is essential to safe and efficient onboard operations, and Scenic Group has once again selected Zenitel to deliver critical communication solutions for its modern river fleet. Emerald Astra entered service in 2026 as the 10th Emerald Star-Ship, while Emerald Lumi is set to become the brand’s first Star-Ship on the Seine.

Advancing the Onboard Experience and Operational Awareness

Emerald Cruises is renowned for delivering award-winning, contemporary luxury experiences on Europe's most iconic waterways.

Designed to mirror the sleek elegance of superyachts with their modern glass exteriors, these ships are built for intimate, premium journeys. Emerald Astra made its European debut in 2026, welcoming 180 guests to Central Europe's scenic routes. Meanwhile, Emerald Lumi is scheduled for a 2027 launch on the Seine River, purpose-built to navigate the beautiful Normandy region and cruise straight into the heart of historic destinations like Honfleur.

Alignment with Responsible Travel

Through its "Cherish the Planet" sustainability program, the group aims to reduce its environmental footprint and foster positive change in the regions its vessels visit. This sustainability framework guides the group's operational decisions – ranging from a reported 95% reduction in single-use plastics across its fleet, highlighted in its 2023 Impact Report, to the sourcing of local regional meals and the development of sustainable shore excursions.

River cruise communication for everyday onboard operations

Seamless communication is essential for maintaining safety and comfort across multi-tiered decks, panoramic lounges, and open sun decks. Crew members require crystal-clear audio coverage for daily announcements in guest spaces. Simultaneously, the navigation team requires uninterrupted communication during complex maneuvering. Finally, maintaining comprehensive crew awareness of activity within internal public areas is vital for identifying potential operational risks before they escalate.

Integrated Systems and Practical Benefits

To address these requirements, Zenitel delivered a tailored unified critical communication package focused on usability, dependable operation, and a cost-effective scope suited specifically to river cruising. The approach is straightforward: provide the functions needed for the vessel’s operating profile without adding unnecessary complexity.

Maritime PAGA and Entertainment Integration

Each vessel is equipped with one Exigo PAGA system. It manages public announcements and safety alarms, ensuring distinct audio distribution to both guests and crew. A critical aspect of the deployment is the integration between Exigo and entertainment equipment using the digital Dante protocol. This setup feeds high-quality audio, including background music distribution, through selected HiFi speakers installed in premium passenger zones.

The core benefit of this integration is the intelligent priority override feature. Within the system configuration, the general alarm holds the highest priority, followed by public address announcements, with background music and entertainment at the lowest level. When a PA announcement or GA is triggered, the system automatically overrides and mutes the local entertainment audio.

Bridge-to-Mooring Talkback

For maneuvering and docking, Zenitel provided the CIS talkback system. This standard critical talkback setup provides direct, point-to-point bridge-to-mooring talkback lines connecting the bridge, bridge wings, and forward/aft mooring stations. The system facilitates straightforward, dependable communication between the captain and the deck crew during docking procedures in tight river locks and busy inland ports.

Onboard CCTV

Enhanced onboard awareness is supported by a CCTV system designed for internal public areas. This surveillance setup gives the crew a clear, centralized overview of passenger spaces. It serves as a vital tool for the rapid identification and assessment of incidents, slips, or operational risks, allowing the team to coordinate an agile response.

A Strong Maritime Partnership

The projects for Emerald Astra and Emerald Lumi reinforce a long-standing relationship between the two companies. Zenitel has previously delivered expansive technology scopes for ocean-going vessels within the group's portfolio, including the ultra-luxury discovery yachts Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II, as well as Emerald Cruises’ ocean superyachts, Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Sakara.

While the ocean-going scope for the Eclipse class requires a highly complex, redundant architecture – including batteryless telephones, advanced Exigo A+B PAGA systems, redundant PABX, LAN networks, and masterclock systems – the projects on the Emerald river ships demonstrate Zenitel’s flexibility. The system selection and software configurations were adapted to match the exact operating profile, scale, and specific budget of river cruise vessels.

For Emerald Astra and Emerald Lumi, that means a focused river cruise communication solution covering the functions that matter most for the application, with integration between the PAGA system and entertainment equipment. It is a practical example of how the same technology partner can support different maritime environments while tailoring the delivered solution to each vessel.
